You may already have picked this one up, but if not, I didn’t want it to be left behind in the flurry of books that will come onto the market this year. I was fortunate to be in a small group of people listening to Eddo-Lodge speak about this when this first came out in 2017 and I was so struck by how erudite she was about a subject that’s emotionally challenging to talk about and filled with prejudice and misconceptions.
Starting life as a blog post in which Eddo-Lodge expressed her frustration at the way discussions of race and racism were being led in Britain by people were weren’t actually affected by it, the book explores white privilege and how it works in society. She also examines feminism and the relationship between race and class.
The thing I love about this book – aside from its content, which is fantastic – is how approachable it is. Here’s a snippet; ‘I used to be sacred of being perceived as an angry black woman. But I soon realised that any number of authentic emotions I displayed could and would be interpreted as anger. My assertiveness, passion and excitement could all be wielded against me. Not displaying anger wasn’t going to stop me being labelled as as angry, so I thought: fuck it. I decided to speak my mind… There is no point in keeping quiet because you want to be liked… Who wins when we don’t speak? Not us.’
