I’m a huge fan of Roxanne Gay and this book didn’t disappoint (by the by, if you haven’t yet read her book ‘Bad Feminist‘, I highly recommend it).
Gay is so personal and intimate in her writing. She shares her intelligent insights as generously as she shares her fears and her insecurities.
If you’ve ever wondered about the aftermath of sexual violence and how that is experienced on a day to day basis in the lived experience of a woman, ‘Hunger’ is a great book to read.
Also, if you’ve not spent any time exploring the prejudices you may have internalised about people’s bodies, and particularly the bodies of people who are obese or morbidly obese, this is a very approachable memoir that’ll open your eyes to some of the difficulties you encounter on a daily basis, just making your way through the world.
I’ve so many favourite quotes I could share from this book, here’s just one; ‘My rage is often silent because no one wants to hear fat-girl stories of taking up too much space and still finding nowhere to fit. People prefer the stories of the too-skinny girls who starve themselves and exercise too much and are ray and gaunt and disappearing in plain sight.’
