This is a question which as a business owner, I need to ask far more regularly than I do. It relates to a mistake I’ve made more than once where I’ve assumed that I shouldn’t send out another promotional email or create another post telling people about something I was launching because, ‘Surely everyone is sick of hearing from me?’
Ah no.
There’s a huge visibility block many women have around being too pushy, too ‘aggressive’, too in people’s faces. As a consequence we tend to swing wildly away from self-promotion towards silence and tentative commentary and invisibility.
Sometimes we launch by stealth.
Launching by stealth looks like sending out an email to your subscribers and noting at the end of the email that something is for sale. And then never mentioning it again.
Or mentioning the promotion once or twice, assuming everyone saw your emails (and that they’ve made a considered opinion about whether to buy your program), and choosing not to ‘bother them’ again, even when the cart is due to close.
It looks like posting a couple of social media pieces exclusively to your community but not branching any further afield than that.
Brand awareness is essential to a thriving business. If people don’t know about you, they cannot buy from you.
It’s easy to assume that just because you feel like you’ve been promoting yourself everywhere you can think of, that your job is done. It’s easy to tell yourself, ‘Surely everyone that wants to buy the program has already seen it and had a chance to make that decision.’
Here’s the thing about that; data shows that on any day in the last 5 years there were on average 640,000 people online for the first time. This was 27,000 every hour.
So many new people coming online every. single. day.
Can you imagine how many people you could access with your business if, rather than assuming everyone who’s interested has heard of your work, you kept asking yourself ‘Who else needs to hear what I have to say?’
Successful businesses are built on habits. One of the habits I’m working on at the moment is to ask myself this question every morning when I sit down at my desk. Want to join me?
